On the afternoon of March 20, the first AI academic lecture series, hosted byGaolingSchool of Artificial Intelligence and the Academic Affairs Office and co-organized byOffice ofLaboratory ManagementandTeachingFacilities Development, was held inroom603, Lide Building. The topic of the lecture is “Intelligence or Disguise? Does sora understand the physical world?” It contains two academic reports and two debates.

At the beginning of the lecture, Wu Jian, Director of the Academic Affairs Office, delivered a speech. Wu Jian expressed her appreciation for the fruitful development results achieved by Gaoling School of Artificial Intelligence in recent years. She said that RUC continues to pay attention to the profound impact of artificial intelligence on talent cultivation, and focuses on cultivating students' ability to cope with technological changes. It is hoped that this AI academic lecture will explore the new direction of digitalization leading the future of higher education.

In the first academic report, Li Chongxuan, Associate Professor of Gaoling School of Artificial Intelligence gave a report titled 'The Past and Present of Sora'. He introduced the concept of the Sora model and its functions. Sora is a text-to-video generative model that generates high-quality, detailed, and consistent one-minute videos based on input text. However, Sora itself also has limitations, and it still cannot grasp a wider range of physical scenario. Finally, Li Chongxuan talked about the future of Sora, and proposed whether Sora could lead to the world's simulators and general artificial intelligence to inspire everyone's thinking.

In the second academic report, Xu Hongteng, Associate Professor of Gaoling School of Artificial Intelligence gave a report titled 'The 'Danger' and 'Opportunity' Brought by Sora'. Xu Hongteng pointed out that due to the development of generative AI, people will further realize that 'what they think is what they get' in production and life, thinking has become the core productivity, and language has become the core means of production. However, this influence also directly leads to the approximation and interference of illusions to the real world, causing people to enter the 'post-truth' era at the same time, which will make many fields face new challenges. For example, journalism will face problems such as fake news and intensified social conflicts. In short, Xu Hongteng believes that this is an era where dangers and opportunities coexist, and the technological changes brought by Sora will have a new impact on the world order.

Subsequently, under the chairmanship of Liu Yong, more than ten teachers including Song Ruihua, Wei Zhewei, Xu Jun, Sun Hao, Xu Hongteng, Chen Xu, Li Chongxuan, Huang Wenbing, Lin Yankai, Zhang Xiao, Mao Jiaxin, and Shen Weiran, launched a fierce and wonderful debate around two topics: 'Intelligence or disguise: Does Sora understand the physical world?' and 'Can pure data-driven routes achieve general AI?'

Wen Jirong, executive dean of Gaoling School of Artificial Intelligence, made a concluding speech. He believed that the discussion on large generative models such as ChatGPT and Sora was actually a discussion between beliefs and technical paths. For large models, we have not yet seen the boundaries, and there are still many opportunities in the era of large models. With Sora coming this year, our goals are ambitious. We hope to apply AI to every subject of RUC, and let us work together to create an intelligent and warm future!
